In normal operation, a sample is mounted on a holder and vibrated between pickup coils while the electromagnet applies a controlled magnetic field; the induced signal is then measured and converted into magnetic moment data. VSM systems like this are commonly used for hysteresis loop measurements, saturation magnetization, coercivity, remanence, magnetic susceptibility, thin film analysis, nanoparticle magnetic characterization, ferrite and rare earth magnet research, superconducting materials, magnetic powders, ceramics, geological samples, spintronics materials, and general solid-state physics \/ materials science research.
