TESTED Beckman Coulter LS 13 320 LS13320SW Particle Size Analyzer w/ DPS Tornado Dry Powder System Module & Computer PC w/ Software
Testing included:
The Beckman Coulter LS 13 320 was connected to a computer and operated using the Tornado Dry Powder System Module connected to vacuum assembly. The system successfully completed its normal preparation cycle, including air circulation, background measurement, optical alignment, and sample analysis.
Testing was performed using Beckman Coulter G35D Silicon Carbide particle-size control powder. The system generated the following results:
d10: 20um / d50: 37um / d90: 57um
All three measurements fell within the acceptance limits printed on the supplied Beckman Coulter assay sheet. The system produced peaks and particle-size distribution consistent with the G35D reference sample. Photos of described results can be seen on photos #22-23. About this system, "The Beckman Coulter LS 13 320 is a laser diffraction particle size analyzer used for particle size distribution, powder characterization, PSD analysis, QA/QC, process control, materials research, pharmaceuticals, minerals, cement, ceramics, pigments, polymers, soils, food powders, toner, catalysts, and other dry particulate samples. This configuration includes the Tornado Dry Powder System, DPS, which disperses dry powder samples through the optical bench for dry particle size measurement rather than requiring wet suspension. Beckman lists the LS 13 320 as a modular system capable of dry powder, organic solvent, small-volume liquid, and aqueous sample analysis, with a particle size measurement range of 0.017 µm to 2000 µm using PIDS, Polarization Intensity Differential Scattering, for high submicron resolution.
The LS 13 320 measures particles by passing a laser beam through the sample zone and detecting the angular scattering pattern produced by moving particles; the instrument uses Fourier optics and light-scattering models to generate the particle size distribution. The optical system uses a 5 mW laser diode at 750 nm or 780 nm as the main source, plus a tungsten-halogen PIDS source with 450 nm, 600 nm, and 900 nm filtered wavelengths through vertical and horizontal polarizers.
The included Tornado DPS dry powder module is intended for dry powder particle sizing and is specified in one used-equipment listing with a 0.4 µm to 2000 µm DPS range, ±2% accuracy, 740 to 750 torr pressure, 10°C to 40°C ambient operating range, 1 to 999 second run time, and 5 to 30 cc sample capacity. The LS 13 320 software supports SOP-based methods, data display, printing, storage, export, customizable reports, and analysis profiles for repeatable particle size testing workflows."
